Gingerbread OTA update
I got the OTA update this morning. Installed with out an issue. Wish I did a backup before I told it to do it. The new look is cool. Now I just need to find out what is new and how to use it.
Android version:2.3.4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.10-g96de068
Build Number: 2.15.531.3 CL82286 release-keysAfter 5 years of watching and waiting for a smart phone: Proud owner of a T-mobile G2. - 08-04-2011, 06:20 AM #2
Very cool that they went with 2.3.4, since all previous leaks only had 2.3.3.

Re: Gingerbread OTA update
I would love to know if Visionary can still temp root to give my phone the ability to run Wireless Tether

Don't think it can. Why not use the built in wireless hotspot? Based on a post on xda, I believe it is still present.

Re: Gingerbread OTA update
Can I use the built-in wireless hotspot without paying extra?
Also, I really like the bluetooth tether instead of the wifi tether - 08-06-2011, 06:28 AM #8
I use it in emergency situations, and have never had to pay extra, not saying if you use it all the time they won't get you though.

Re: Gingerbread OTA update
After visiting and calling several T-Mobile stores today, none of them had the sdcard update. I decided to use the zip file from Kevin and it didn't work at first. I got stuck at a black screen with a phone and a red triangle picture. I did some digging on a forum at xda developers and found the solution to my problem. Here's what I found on xda and it worked.
"Rename file to update.zip (make sure it's not update.zip.zip)
Put it in root of SDCARD
Power off phone
Press volume up and power to turn on. Choose the second option (RECOVERY)
Once You get to the red triangle with exclamation mark press and hold VOLUME UP AND POWER
Now You'll see a menu,
Choose "apply update.zip" and wait.
Then You'll have to reboot.
After the reebot You'll see a phone with two green arrows, just wait
Then the phone will reboot and You'll have Gingerbread"
Took about 10 minutes total time, update was pretty painless and I still have all my data. NO FACTORY RESET!!! I was totally stock G2 2.2, no root.
Good luck!Thanked by: - 08-16-2011, 05:01 AM #18

Re: Gingerbread OTA update
What does placing it at the root of the SD card mean?

Re: Gingerbread OTA update
Was anyone using the leaked version of 2.3.3 that had backlight issues and the 2.3.4 release fixed it? Just debating on whether I want to force the update or wait for the OTA to spare losing all apps and such which wouldn't kill me. Posting this, by the way, using RemoteDroid which is pretty freaking neat.

Root of the sd card means to drag the file into the sd card main and not a folder in the sd card.

Not sure you can apply the OTA over 2.3.3 leak. If coming from 2.2 then you won't lose your apps/data if you manually update with the OTA file.
