So... I don't own a Nexus S, but as a response to Jerry's macro picture, here's one I took with my N1 running CM 6.0 (so not even sporting the latest camera update)
It's at an angle, because the light source was right on top and i didn't wanna use the flash.

Not bad. I can read the lettering. You should try something with more color to see how that looks.

Here are two quarter shots done with a Samsung Fascinate. The tricky thing about coins is they reflect mostly whatever is opposite from the camera. Try standing up a folded piece of paper behind the coin to get more of an even white light.
