I just got my nexus s last night I had a G2 before. After adding my Google account and setting up the nexus when I go to text someone and enter a contact for example Steve I will see two of them.

I searched through the forums and tried deleting contacts on my phone then syncing with Google contacts and still having same problem.

I figured it out, what I did was I went into gmail account on a computer and selected all contacts and clicked Merge. And It said it found XX duplicate contacts and then merged them. Thats it, I dont see duplicates anymore

I had the same problem after switching from Nexus One to Nexus S.I just had to do it manually. The worst part (for me at least) was when I logged in to my gmail and saw all the contacts on there were duplicate as well, even after I had deleted duplicates on the phone.
