I've had my Nexus S for a while now and ever since I got it I've noticed the Gallery app takes a long time to open and show my pics and vids. I saw a similar post on the Nexus One forum and discovered I have the same exact problem:

Based on the above thread, when I put my phone in airplane mode will it load the gallery instantly like it should. I do not have a Picasa web album, and the option to sync picasa isn't listed in my default account sync settings. It doesn't matter if I load a pic from a message (download) or take a picture from my phone (internal memory) it still takes a long time, or in some cases just shows a black screen and loads nothing at all. I'm running 2.3.3, and have less than 80 pics/vids total (I haven't scratched the surface of the 16GB internal memory). My guess is the Gallery is trying to sync or load something online which takes a long time, but I don't use any of that and wish I knew of a way to turn that functionality off, besides putting it in airplane mode.

I've been having the same problem with lag time in photo loading since I've got my nexus S. Finally, I've installed "Quickpic" from market, and in the setting checked the "Cache for full screen view" no more problem at all anymore....But in the stock gallery application I still have lag time in loading for the photos...So far I've set the quickpic as default anyway.....

I had a similar problem when I loaded 180 pictures on my Droid Bionic phone. I deleted all of the thumbnails by mistake. When I did this the Gallery application began running very slowly. The solution was to move the photos to a new directory. When I did that the thumnails were re-created and Gallery began running well. Hope this helps!

Now with ICS the gallery seems MUCH faster.

Agreed, Gallery on Nexus S with ICS is much improved.
