switching between multiple callers

I have a friend who was having trouble finding an easier way to switch between callers on the nexus S. The switch callers button that shows up wasn't doing anything and I would have to hit the home button, hit the phone dialled, then go to manage calls.

I'm sure I'm just being stupid and am missing something really simple.

Please help!
