Get thee a good 2.3 rom.

Android 2.2 is dated and Stock rom runs slow. Overclock the CPU with SetCpu. Install SuperUser.

BUT..

First and foremost install a custom recovery!

There are many ROOT only apps in android market, most free. XDA has a few as well.

All require superuser though.

I suggest titanium backup and reboot widget.
