Excuse me for my ignorance. I am planning to root my Optimus T. Overall I like how things are and basically want to remove the T Mobile bloatware. If that's all I want to do, then there is no need to install a custom ROM, is there? Is there an advantage to installing a custom ROM?

You're right. Root your phone and install something like Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware. Keep in mind that you're changes will be permanent. First make a backup of all the apps that you want to remove with Titanium Backup just in case.

Advantages to installing a custom rom depend on your needs. Anything based on stock firmware will like just be themed and +- various apps and a custom kernel. Custom roms, other than miks CM7, are also deodexd which takes up more valuable space on your data partion (less available space for installing apps).
