New SD card won't mount or format

I purchased a new 8gb SDHC card to replace an old 1gb card.
I have tried to partition the SD card many ways but I can't get it to mount.
I am running the Cyanogen Mod7 on the LG optimus T. In Recovery mode it will not mount or format sdcard. I have left it unallocated, one 8gb FAT partition, 1 FAT, 1 ext3, 1 linux-swap, and more but it just never recognizes it. Is there something simple I am missing? I thought maybe the device couldn't handle SDHC but I don't believe that is true. Any help would be appreciated.

It turns out that all I had to do was use windows for the formatting not Ubuntu, problem solved.

Its not required to format and partition in windoze. Use Gparted,Diskutility or Qparted in any Linux flavor. Partition any drive to anything you want any size you want of course free.
