IIf you have root then search "bloat freezer" it's a great app. I use it

i had read the descrip of that one and wondered if it is for real.
Supposedly Titanium Backup 'pro' has the capability also - do they take the same approach or is one superior in that regard? Until I go the custom ROM route this is the necessary medicine

I've only ever tried Titanium Backup Pro, and I can say from my experience it's worked just fine in that regard. So well that I've never considered there might be other apps for that out there.

Bloat freezer is my app, feel free to PM me with any questions, you can also email me at the address included in the app. Bloat freezer uses the same method as TB Premium, preventing the app from showing up, running on its own, etc. makes it totally invisible to your system while also allowing you to defrost at any time.
