With the Jelly Bean update around the corner, and my discovered lack of ability with rooting and unlocking, I would like to undo the process. How would I go about that?

Follow the directions very closely, you should be okay with rooting this puppy. It may take a couple of times to really get it rooted too, the first time I rooted my Optimus S it didn't work so I tried it again.

Truth: It took me two tries to unlock my 1x bootloader...

All the computers available to me are botching the dev tools at one point or another. I feel like I'm definitely doing something wrong, but I can't figure it out. I'm basically inept at the flashing process and rooting in general. Are there any files I need beyond the exploit and dev tools?

If I remember right, you download and install dev tools then the htcdev website actually works with the software and following those steps unlocks it.
