Re: Thinking About Rooting...
Do a backup first. You can easily restore to exactly the way you have it now if things do no work out, or if you just want to run both for the time being. No danger, beyond the 10 minutes it would take to do the restore.
I bet most of those reboot issues are from restored data, or some other no-no. I removed every app I wanted to use from Aroma... I think some those get installed as /system apps, which in turn causes problems when using TitBU to "Back all user apps with data" later. I removed most HTC stuff, except what I use (flashlight and calendar I think), ticked the complete removal of Sense and chose Nova for launcher. Viper has quite a lot you CAN do before you even flash the ROM, but you do not have to. If it seems overwhelming, just flash and try it out. You can always redo.
After a backup of course. Always keep one or two good backups around, or good points on whatever ROM you like, so you can recover quickly if you make a mistake.Thanked by: - 01-17-2013, 02:54 PM #57
Re: Thinking About Rooting...
Make sure if you are still stock, do the back up, but also look for the stock rom/boot.img for when you need to fastboot it/flash GUI flash it

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
If you end up flashing JellyBam at any point (like most cm/AOKP roms with hboot 1.14) once you flash it it will take a long time to boot.. After 5 minutes I usually just hold power down until the screen turns off and then it boots fine within a few minutes

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
If you came from firmware 2.20, look in the ruu section of the index on xda, that's what you need I believe. (Although I've never went back to dock, myself)

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
is it true you dont need to flash the boot.img anymore? someone just said aroma does that during the install?

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
Viper only does this that I know of. so if you are doing anything other than Viper 3.1, you need to flash the IMG. The easiest way is likely the app setup to do this, where you point it at the same zip file you do for the ROM. Downgrading Hboot still seems like the wisest course though, as it removes this headache forever more.
Heard horror stories about yet another new version of Hboot that if taken via OTA, will make all non-compliant kernels have no touchscreen support. There is only the OTA that is compatible until the kernel source is released, so this is a no-fix situation currently. Do NOT take the OTA when it comes out. - 01-27-2013, 03:34 PM #64
Re: Thinking About Rooting...
I just use flash image gui app instead of flashing through pc..it's not a hassle at all compared to adb fastboot commands

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
No, viper will flash it for you...I've never had an issue flashing viper anyways, but some telus one x's have an issue with aroma (extremely rare though)

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
Not for viper xl , other Roms you can flash with that though..and remember, if for any reason viper doesn't boot, just flash it- this never happened to me, but is a solution I've seen on xda

Re: Thinking About Rooting...
That's a little more tricky.. there are a few Roms that are stock with little to no tweaks I would suggest over your current stock rom (and they are more stable too). Once you are rooted, download titanium backup and back up apps only..that way you can restore them to their current state on any rom
As far as restoring your current stock, you just gave to flash the appropriate Ruu (located in the one x index on xda) and flash it... I do believe that will relock your bootloader once you do that- not 100% on that seeing as I've never wanted to go back haha
