    Default speed dial not working

When I use speed dial it says "connection problem or invalid MMI code". Any suggestion on fixing this?

I don't have an AT&T phone but can you clarify exactly how you are using the speed dial when you get this error. There is more than one way to use it so it would be helpful for people trying to help you.

Also, are you using another dialer from the app store? Rooted?

Sorry didnt think of all that. Im using the stock dialer. Its been this way from day one. I know that you can push and hold the set speed dial number and it will call that person. That works fine but if I push the number 2 which I have set for my wife her number comes up then I push the send/call button is when a message box pops up and saying the "error". Not rooted

That's actually correct. You should get an error doing that. What you are doing when you do that is trying to call the number 2, which is not a valid number to call - it's not a phone number, a service number, a service code. It's the same as if you picked up your landline and pressed 2 and nothing else. You would after a short while get that annoying tone and an operator message.

If you don't want to do the long press for the speed dial for some reason, then you can (using your example) press 2, then press your wife's contact that comes up, and then press call.
