Slow media scanning at boot up on GB

Lately I've noticed that the media scanning on boot up is taking 10 minutes to finish and the phone is unresponsive during this period. The icon sits in the notification bar for several minutes before moving to the next step. TWLauncher frequently fails to launch during this period. I'm wondering if my media card is going bad. I deleted several apps to see if that helped - it didn't. Facebook also frequently won't run the first time, so I tried deleting it, but discovered it is build in so I could only remove the updates. I'm running stock GingerBread. I know this is a lot of questions, but I bet they are related. Thanks in advance.
