Yes u can do that anytime u want. Only thing is an unsubsidized is $500+ without a contract. I usually buy phones off Craigslist/eBay I do this a few times a year. Just make sure to check that the ESN is clean before purchasing.

If you go into a corporate store, SIM replacement for switching to an LTE and/or MicroSIM devices should be free.
