Why am I getting mms texts from people that didn't send anything?

My wife has an LG G4 that she recently switched to from an IPhone (about a month). She recently started receiving text messages that appear as an MMS message with a download button from people who didn't send anything. She even got one from me. She also mysteriously got a phone call from herself! How can I troubleshoot this? Is this an Android problem or an AT&T issue? Thanks!

This can't be an AT&T thing because I get them also and I live in Malaysia and use Maxis. I am getting them from multiple people repeatedly.

It could be a carrier issue, it could be a prank, it could be a rogue app. It has to be diagnosed phone-in-hand.
