    Default Mobile Hotspot

I can't seem to get any good info on this. I am heading to Montreal in a month and I am looking to get a mobile hotspot while I am there. Basically I am looking for a store that I can walk into that will sell an american a hotspot for a week. Telus seems to be the one where I could buy a hotspot with no contract and I could pay for a month so I can use my bandwith for the week. Any pointers? Also, I am looking for an unlocked hotspot that I can just buy a sim card anywhere I go to use internet. Mainly global access for Canada and Carribean locations.. I have no idea where to start looking for this. Thanks.

Zoomtel (Zoom) sells a 3G GSM hotspot, unlocked, try Amazon or Newegg both sell it. I will be using in western Canada next week with a Telus SIM. Check back with me late next week and I tell you how it worked (or not worked!)

I bought a Mifi 2372. I brought it to several kiosks... Rogers, Telus, Virgin etc.. All of them had no idea what the heck I was talking about. The only place that I got somewhere with was Virgin. They sold me a prepaid card and told me to go online to activate, I did. They wanted payment in pre-paid cards, I went through it all, got an error on the site. I called customer service and they told me that they only do prepaid on their stick. Nothing else. I am pissed. I added the global plan to my Verizon hotspot for now. Pretty fast but expensive $25 / 100Mb

I happened to pass a Telus store today. I stopped in with my hotspot. At first they told me that they never ever saw one of these before and they have been open for several years. After about an hour of them trying to find all of the loopholes, they got it paired. The biggest hurdle was the residence issue. They didn't want to sign me up at first but after several phone calls they faked my address in the computer. I live in the city of NJ in the province of Quebec. They told me that it was good on their end and in about 1/2 hr it would start working. I waited about an hour with no luck it was stuck in roaming. After reading on some forums I saw that I needed to change the APN settings. I found a list here.

I found Telus on the list and made a new entry on the hotspot. I added
    Name: TELUS SP
    APN: sp.telus.com

    and bingo!!
I come up here often and the guy told me that when I knew when I was coming back up just to email him a week prior and he would set up a new sim for me and have it ready when I got there. He told me that their sims expire after 90 days of inactivity.

He actually documented the entire process so he would be able to do this without problems with other customers in the future.

It was an expensive lesson but I am happy now that I've learned lots about this.
