can't control sound output

Running Android 10 on a Dragon Touch tablet. I have a TV connected to the HDMI port for an external monitor. When I do that, it automatically routes the sound output to HDMI. However, when I plug in headphones, the sound still goes out to HDMI. I want it to go to headphones only, but I can't find any kind of control to do that. There doesn't appear to be anything in the Settings to enable me to do that.

I could for a work-around just turn the volume all the way down on my HDMI device, but I'd really rather have more control over my OS.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your input. It sounds like yet another simple thing that a Linux laptop can do that an Android tablet can't. :-(
