More than a year ago I posted a similar issue: https://forums.androidcentral.com/g...-auto-but-not-have-google-assistant-jump.html

However, this is a bit different. First, the solution to that doesn't solve the new dilemma. "Hey Google" detection remains turned off on my phone.

Problem is that if I have Android Auto running - usually the map is up - next to any sound - spoken or sung word from the radio or a passenger voice - will trigger the annoying "BLOOP!" and then my car audio is off, and google assistant is waiting for a voice prompt that I never meant to offer.

It's been this way, guessing, since summer 2021. I don't remember what OS or app update I might have just done, but I do keep those things current.

How do I revert to what I want, which is:
  • Google assistant only comes on if I touch the microphone on the car display
  • But when I do touch the microphone, then and only then, does it seek voice input from me
FWIW, I have never had Google Assistant on my phone. Just in Android Auto from my car.

Maybe, I hope, I've found the answer at https://www.nextpit.com/how-to-deactivate-google-assistant

That is:

  1. Launch the Google app on your smartphone.
  2. Click on your profile image (at the top of the screen).
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Google Assistant.
  5. Navigate to the General option.
  6. Disable the Google Assistant option by tapping on the slider button.
  7. Once this is done, a pop-up will appear warning you about the features that will not work when you disable Google Assistant on your mobile device. It is also here that you can delete your search history on Assistant (recommended if you usually save your voice searches).
  8. Click Turn Off.

Let's see what happens in the driving ahead. Usually I can't go more than 10-15 minutes without the assistant trying to take over. Fingers crossed. I'll report if I can go several days without this problem.

I didn't think Google Assistant had a way of working on Android Auto other than with/through Google Assistant on the connected phone.

The google assistant seems to hijack less now than before, but still jumps in. But today I found https://techbriefly.com/2021/07/15/how-to-turn-off-google-assistant-driving-mode/ and it doesn't seem exactly right, but because of it, I found that, from my phone, maps > settings > navigation settings > "ok google" detection has TWO toggles. The top "Hey Google" was turned off as I'd like, but the second "While driving" one was. I turned that off too and we'll see what happens. I think this will fix it for sure.
