Laser autofocus and a case I was trying out - Can it be slightly covered?

The laser autofocus (LDAF) is located between the flash and telephoto lens, correct?

I was trying out a case that seems to come very close to covering the edge of the AF sensor. Doesn't it work by bouncing laser light off the subject? Does the light come back through the same sensor? (I took test shots and it seemed to work)

Some cases appear to only have a pinhole to accommodate it. Example:

Any insight? Thanks!

I might be mistaken but I think the laser is completely invisible to the human eye but the camera sensor can see it giving it a focus point, it doesn't actually bounce back to the phone. A laser hitting an object at an angle would bounce off at an angle, not return to its source.
