What is Sleipnir?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Norse mythology, Sleipnir (pronounced slayp-neer) is an eight-legged horse. Sleipnir is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, Sleipnir is Odin's steed, is the child of Loki and Sva?ilfari, and is described as the best of all horses.

The Sleipnir ROM is a barebones Android-loving beastie - only the essentials were retained. It was cultivated from four different ROMs that each had their own unique strengths, to become one. It is the logical combination of Aeneas, by Leslie Ann, ICS Elite, by Curtis1973 and ktb83, Tagged, by Hashtag, and ?gir (now Sleipnir), by yours truly. Sleipnir has the goal of being the fastest, most efficient and battery-saving, Gingerbread-2.3.7-based, non-CyanogenMod/AOKP, ROM for the LG Optimus Elite.

This is how the stock ROM should have been, and it's getting better all of the time thanks to all of you. :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installation
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • If this is your first time:
    1. Download the ROM appropriate for your Carrier.
      • Using the version of the ROM for a Carrier your phone is not with, means you're gonna have a bad time.
    2. Verify the MD5 value or, preferably, SHA-1 or SHA-256 values.
      • Doing this one simple step helps me pinpoint what real bugs exist, so that the ROM can get better from your feedback. If you don't do this and run into a problem, the most likely reason for the problem is that the build of the ROM corrupted in transit to your device, which could have been known in advance. You do want an exact copy, right?
    3. Reboot into CWM or TWRP, and make a Nandroid backup.
    4. Format /data once. This needs to be done, or you're gonna have a bad time.
      • You can restore your data from a Nandroid backup (Note: only restore data), but do so only after Sleipnir has been installed, otherwise your phone will get stuck in a bootloop. The how-to guide can be found here.
    5. Install the ROM .zip file. The installer will take care of the rest.
    6. Run Fix Permissions in your custom recovery. This is a preventative measure.
      • If using CWM, this option can be found under Advanced, via the Main Menu.
    7. Reboot the phone normally via the Main Menu of your custom recovery.
    8. Enjoy!
  • Updating:
    4. Install the ROM .zip file. The installer will take care of the rest.
      • If you're curious, the installer wipes /cache and /system a few times prior to installation, as well as the dalvik-cache (three times, for good measure). Once the installation has finished, the installer proceeds to wipe the dalvik-cache three more times (just in case). Can't be too careful when Android is temperamental, no?
    5. Run Fix Permissions in your custom recovery. This is a preventative measure.
      • If using CWM, this option can be found under Advanced, via the Main Menu.
    6. Reboot the phone normally via the Main Menu of your custom recovery.
    7. Enjoy!
Note: If you've changed your network settings through the device's hidden menu, after flashing Sleipnir (even just an update) you will have to change your settings once again, as they will be reverted back to their defaults. One example is changing your network to CDMA only, by following this thread's instructions. After flashing any ROM (including Sleipnir) you will have to make that change again if you wish to keep it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's Been Removed?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Android Live Wallpapers
  • com.google.android.voicesearch.apk
  • GenieWidget.apk
  • Google+
  • Google Maps
  • Google Play Books
  • Google Play Music
  • Google Shopper
  • Google Talk
  • Google Wallet
  • HTMLViewer.apk
  • Magic Smoke Wallpapers
  • Mobile ID (a Trojan Horse of bloatware. No, really.)
  • Music Visualization Wallpapers
  • Polaris Viewer (replaced with Total Commander)
  • Protips.apk
  • Quick Memo
  • Sound Recorder
  • Sprint_Installer2201.apk
  • Sprint Smart Device Manager
  • Sprint Voicemail (don't fret Sprint users, Voicemail still functions correctly)
  • Street View
  • Videos.apk
  • VM ROMs (not what you think it is)
  • YouTube
  • Zone-Myaccount-v3.0.43.apk (homescreen shortcut)
As can be seen above, there are many apps that have been removed from how the phone came out of the box, including Gapps. The reasons for their removal are, among others:
  1. They were bloat/weighing the phone down unnecessarily (see this guide)
  2. Everyone uses a phone differently, and naturally not everyone uses all of the same apps.
  3. In a true stock ROM, only the bare essentials, and maximum compatibility with everything you might need to do, should be kept.
The result? You have the most freedom with your phone in choosing what you have and what you do not have; you can truly have an experience tailored to you. All of the extras, that manufacturers think you might want (but won't let you get rid of), have been vanquished. This provides an ultra-lightweight, smooth, uncluttered experience - you are free to do whatever you like without hassle. Enjoy!

Reviews
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a collection of reviews made by others about Sleipnir:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recommended
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. CPU Settings
    • Governor: smartassV2 (default in Sleipnir)
    • I/O Scheduler: noop
    • Min Frequency: 245 MHz - Anything lower, and you're gonna have a bad time.
    • Max Frequency: 1612 MHz - Maximum allowed by the kernel.
      • Note: Though most units can handle it, some OEs become unstable at a maximum frequency of 1612 MHz and/or the minimum of 245 MHz. This is likely due to minute differences in manufacturing. If your device is unstable at those frequencies, try lowering the maximum frequency to the next highest, and raising the minimum frequency to the next lowest. Rinse and repeat until the phone becomes stable.
    • Result: No lag, and supreme battery life.
      .
  2. [THEME] Black IceS_VIII

    Thanks to starkraving's theme-genius-(themius?)-ness, Sleipnir has a dedicated alternative theme. He deserves kudos and a special place here in the OP. The link to his splendid work may be found here: BlackIceS_VIII for Sleipnir.
    Keep in mind that to use this theme, you will need the de-odexed version of Sleipnir. There are instructions in his thread for flashing the theme.

    Enjoy! And well done, starkraving - we all appreciate it!

Found a Bug Hiding in a Galaxy Far, Far Away?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's see what we can do to squash it!
  1. Did the bug spring up once, does it show its face every once in a blue moon, or can it be easily and frequently replicated or seen?
  2. What were you doing when the bug showed up?
  3. Did you double check everything you've done, following all directions verbatim (word for word), and make sure that MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 sums match, for the ROM?
  4. Did you try checking the pages of this thread and the rest of the LG Optimus Elite and Optimus Elite Rooting, ROMs, and Hacks boards, to see if someone has run into something similar? A solution may be found there!
  5. If you're still feeling out of luck, feel free to create a post about the issue you're experiencing in this thread, detailing the problem and what you have and have not done, and someone will get back to you ASAP!

Random Reboots Got You Feeling Down?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you...
  1. Follow the proper installation instructions provided above, by:
    • Downloading the correct version of the ROM for your carrier?
    • If you were switching to Sleipnir from a different ROM altogether, did you wipe /data before installing Sleipnir?
    • Fix Permissions in CWM, after installing Sleipnir?
  2. Have too high of a maximum frequency in your CPU tuner app of choice, and try to lower it down a notch or two, three, or more, post-install?
  3. Have too low of a minimum frequency in your CPU tuner app of choice, and try to raise it up a notch or two, three, or more, post-install?
  4. Get a crash after trying to update or install an app through Google Play?
    • This virtually always happens with this phone whenever Google Play needs to update. Try letting it update (leaving wifi or 3G on for up to 30 minutes), then reboot back into CWM to wipe /cache, dalvik-cache, and run Fix Permissions.
  5. Try wiping the battery stats?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uh-oh! My Battery Only Lasts for Five Minutes on a Full Charge!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't fret; the community's got you covered! Here are several tips to increase your battery's longevity:
  1. Read the above Recommended CPU Settings, and try using only one profile, with only one governor, that is active/running at all times, instead of multiple profiles and/or multiple governors. The CPU having to change profiles and governors frequently can cause a big drain in battery life.
  2. In CWM (ClockWorkMod Recovery); Wipe Battery Stats -> Reboot -> Fully Charge Your OE.
  3. Install and properly configure DroidWall.
  4. Properly configure JuiceDefender (it comes included with the ROM for good reason). It is very helpful if you have access to the Advanced profile of JuiceDefender, allowing for the greatest amount of customization. The following are my recommended settings, whereby JuiceDefender does not interfere with your manually enabled/disabled data, gps, wifi, bluetooth, etc., but still improves battery life all the same:

    Artine said:
    Key: Blue and Green mean that feature is active. The only features mentioned below are only mentioned because they are/should be active.

    Under...

    Status:

    JuiceDefender -> Enabled (green)
    Profile -> Advanced (green)
    Notification -> Hide Status Bar Icon (blue)

    Help:

    Screen -> Enable After Unlock (blue)
    Mobile Data Autofix -> Mobile Data Autofix (blue)
    Disable on Wifi -> Data (blue)
    Start at Boot -> Boot Workaround (blue)

    Controls:

    Mobile Data -> Enable (green)
    Wifi -> Enable (green)
    Options (right below Wifi) -> Auto Disable (blue) -> Wifi Preferred (blue).
    Autosync -> Ping (green)

    Schedules:

    Schedule -> Enabled (green)
    Frequency -> 15m (blue)
    Duration -> 30s (blue)
    Controls -> Custom (blue) -> Data (blue) -> Wifi (blue) -> Sync (blue)
    Night -> Enabled (green)
    Start/End (your choice, but mine is the following) -> 2am-6am (blue slider)
    Options -> Airplane (blue) -> Silent (blue)
    Peak -> Enabled (green)
    Start/End (your choice, but mine is the following) -> 7:30am-11:30pm (blue slider)
    Frequency -> On (blue)
    Controls -> Custom (blue) -> Data (blue) -> Wifi (blue) -> Sync (blue)

    Triggers:

    Battery -> Enabled (green)
    Battery Threshold -> 15% (blue)
    Charger -> AC (blue)
    Screen -> Enabled (green)
    Options -> Ignore on Low Battery (blue)
    Controls -> Custom (blue) -> Data (blue) -> Wifi (blue) -> Sync (blue)
    Traffic -> Enabled (green)
    Traffic Threshold -> Normal (blue) -> 15s (blue)

    And that's it. Everything else is left untouched/is disabled/inactive. Feel free to change things according to how it best suits you, of course, like the schedules, but that's a carbon copy of what I currently have (and have had for over a month now).

Credits
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most of the credit goes to Hashtag, Curtis, KTB, giantpune, and Leslie Ann, and of course the rest of the community as well. This ROM went from being a solo project by myself, to becoming a fusion of my work with Curtis and KTB's tag-team ICSE, Hashtag's Tagged, Leslie Ann's Aeneas, and giantpune's custom kernel. Also thanks to pilot03 for helping me get a Sprint version of both Sleipnir and, as a direct result, Hydra, up and going.

Please thank all of them for their hard, quality work, and their assistance in helping to build this ROM - after all, without it, without them, and without you, this ROM would not exist.

Thank you.

I see that this rom is pretty much obsolete now :p Is there anyone with a copy of this rom that I can flash to my good ol' VM696?
