looking for new ROM and kernel
I just rooted my phone for the first time. No im looking to get a new ROM and kernel. I want to overclock my kernel to make things run faster. For my ROM I am on Froyo now and wasn't a better one. I really am interested in something that i can use my hotspot with out paying Verizon a fee. Any suggestions?

Re: looking for new ROM and kernel
There's a few decent ones out there... I'm using Bamf Forever. All of the newer ROMs are Gingerbread so you will need to upgrade your radio as well. As for kernels I'm using Imo
You can use this guide for ROMs and Radio installs: [Guide] How to Backup, Restore & Install ROMs on The Thunderbolt
At the end of the guide is What's Available for ROMs/Kernels/Radios.
Heres my setup as an example:
Gingerbread 2.11.605.3 Radio:
Bamf Forever ROM: !)
Imos lean test Kernel: )
For the radios... you need to flash/install twice... one at a time.. one for CDMA and one for LTE. Just follow the How To ROM Guide and repeat the process for each radio. Make sure you remove the first CDMA radio off of the sd card before placing the second LTE radio on it.
For the Bamf ROM... version 1.0.9 is just a fix/patch (not a full ROM) so you would need to install 1.0.8 first which is the full ROM.
That's just an example of my setup. - 10-22-2011, 10:57 AM #3
Re: looking for new ROM and kernel
Oh and by the way you can use your hotspot for free NOW.... as long as the phone is rooted... Download "Barnacle Wifi Tether" from the Android Market.

Re: looking for new ROM and kernel
Same way as a ROM except don't wipe the data. After installing the ROM.... You can then install the kernel. Only wipe the cache partition and the dalvik cache.. No Data Wipe.

Almost the same way you flash a ROM. Do a nandroid backup. Put the kernel on your sd card. Boot into recovery. I like to wipe the cache partition and the Dalvik cache(Don't wipe data). Go to install zip from sd card, and load it like you would a ROM. Reboot when finished.

I'm running the exact same setup as you are and I am getting at least 3 random reboots a day and sometimes even find my phone completely off and have to do a battery pull to turn it back on (which is a pain since I'm at work and have a seidio convert case on it so that's 2 cases I have to take off).
I did the usual wiped data, cache, dalvik, loaded bamf forever 1.0.8 first then patched with 1.0.9. Loaded the lean kernel and running it on normal.
I'm also getting force close with Google services framework every hour or so. Should I just start from scratch or can I still manage to salvage this ROM so I don't have to reload everything all over again.
Ps. I came from bamf forever 1.0.7 and didn't have any of these issues. - 10-27-2011, 09:48 AM #9
Re: looking for new ROM and kernel
@Senor
I was also having the phone randomly shut off on me since 1.0.7. Go into Bamf settings and change the minimum cpu speed from 265 to 364. Haven't had a problem since then. Just remember that it sets back to 265 sometimes when rebooting the phone so double check the minimum speed everytime you reboot.
I'm not getting random reboots so I'm not sure what thats from. Could be from he combination of problems your having.
I was getting force closures with around 5 apps.... which was fixed by uninstalling the app and re-installing. Don't restore the apps from a backup. Download the messed up apps from the market and then you can restore just the app data from any backups that you have. - 10-27-2011, 02:57 PM #10
