Default Just picked up a TBolt today... trouble rooting.

Well, I finally had it with the Droid Charge's pathetic GPS troubles combined with the fact that it won't be getting ICS... so I picked up a Thunderbolt. (2.11.605.9)

I've rooted the Droid and a variety of cell phones and a Nook Color. This thing has me stumped.

Following the instructions at HTCdev.com, I installed HTC Synch, shut off my Norton VC and then made it to step 8:

    CD Android files>fastboot oem get_identifier_token

    But what I get is:

    ...
    <bootloader> [ERER} command error !!!
    OKAY [ 0.272s]
    Finished. total time 0.272s

I retraced the steps... have the 3 files in the directory (adb.exe, AdbWinapp.dll, fastboot.exe)

Phone is fastboot USB, meaning I've got the USB cable hooked up to my puter. I rebooted it, turn the VC off again, tried the CMD route again, and got the same result.

I've searched a lot and came up with nothing.

Any ideas would be very helpful, since this is literally my first day with this phone.

    Thanks!

you might try getting the 605.5 ruu and flashing that first. Then you can root using the revolutionary method which is super easy. Doing that without being rooted already wipes everything out without being able to back up, but since you just got the phone maybe you don't have much that needs to be backed up that google doesn't already do for you.

You may have already done this, but I'm just offering this as a general heads up:

Be sure that whatever root method you're using is compatible with the software version loaded on your phone! Some of the exploits used to gain root early on were eventually patched with software updates...meaning some older published root methods don't work anymore.

Granted, I rooted my phone almost a full year ago, so it's not something I really keep up with, but I *believe* the current preferred method for the latest OS version (2.11.605.9) is downgrade the OS to 605.5 and then run the Revolutionary method of root.
See this post here: [GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary
Has detailed instructions for latest root method, including a link to downgrade instructions as well. I'd check that out.

Thanks, guys, but in trying the Revolutionary way, I've run into a brick wall.

yesterday, when I made it over to XDA to view the s-off thread, the method had been removed. For whatever the reason, it says this:

Does anybody else have a link to a downgrade method?

also note i figure out how to paste into revolutionary, you have to right click on task bar never had to do that in ADB but it works lol, also that wasn't my problem i don't know what was it kept giving me the wrong key i gave it my info many times made sure there was no spaces pasted it in in still kept getting same wrong key, someone on IRC helped albiet he was very rude acted like i was stupid and a liar but he helped me non the less and got me the correct key, i'm assuming theres something up with my comp or browser causing this issue i'll look into that later, my suggestion is if you keep having same problem to just try getting the key from another computer if possible

OK... I got this done. The nice thing about this rooting business is that it's hard to be first to screw it up. I got it done using an auto roll back program and then revolution did it's thing... so it's all good.

Thanks to everyone for their help. Much appreciated.

That link (or should i say that thread) was posted by the guy who charges $45 to remotely root your phone. I guess more people were downgrading/rooting by themselves and he wasn't making any $$$. Removing that post is just a crappy thing to do IMO.

I realize that the OP's problem has been solved, but just to help future noob rooters, Cyber Warrior's instructions for rooting with Revolutionary that were posted here in the AndroidCentral Thunderbolt Rooting forum worked perfectly for me.

I ran into a problem when the revolutionary.io website was down for a while and it was necessary for me to read the instructions thoroughly more than once but, for me, the rooting instructions were flawless.
