Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Ok so I created Titanium backups and Nandroid backups. Did everything right, but then I accidentally formatted my SD card when I was trying to find the ROM zip file I put on there. So the backups are gone (forgot to create them on PC too). Been going through recovery programs and managed to at least find the Nandroid backup which totals to like 1.4 GB so I had to use 2 programs to get the parts since they have 1 GB recovery limits.
Anyway, how do I put this Nandroid backup (made from CWM) on the SD card and restore it from Clockwork recovery mode so I can restore stock ROM and try installing a ROM again? Does the folder the backup is in need to be named "clockworkmod"? Also do I need to clear the cache and Dalvik cache and all that again too before or after?
I also saved my SMS and contacts, so that's good news. Apps-wise, I just used Titanium for a few like Temple Run, no big deal.
Alternatively if this can't be done, is it possible to just install the ROM I want to run and just start over basically? I'd just have to redownload the apps and import the SMS and contacts. I just need to know where to place the ROM and the SD card this time so I don't hit something and mess up again lol.
Please help, thanks!!!Last edited by naanan; 06-30-2012 at 07:53 PM.

/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/backupname/
no need to wipe cache, etc. - 06-30-2012, 07:59 PM #3

Your backed up nandroid will go into this on your sd card:
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/"your nandroided backup folder name"
All your contents of that particular nandroid will go into that specific folder.
As an example, If I had 2 nandroids backed up, here's what they'd look like on the sd card, as well as in Recovery for when you need to load them:
1)
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/bamf1.10_jun-30-12
2)
/mnt/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/bamf-cubed_jun-27-12
However, I'm not 100% sure it would work for you if you don't have clockworkmod app installed (since you cant). Perhaps someone with expertise can fill us in.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
I'm actually restoring the Nandroid backup as we speak (put it as clockwordmod/backup/etc), so I'll post an update shortly. If I can actually get it back, restore my contacts and SMS I'll be content. I frequently moved around my pics/vids anyway. Apps aren't a big deal.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
It worked! Wow, I caught a huge break. All my apps, contacts and SMS are untouched! I still have root access and everything.
Only thing I lost was my pictures/videos, but I have those backed up. How would I port them back on via sd card? What would the format have to be like "clockworkmod/backup/etc"?
Also to install this ThunderShed-v1.6_CM7.2-tbolt.zip mod what would I do exactly? What would the folder format like "clockworkmod/backup/etc" be on the sdcard so it actually finds it and installs from zip? Don't want to screw this up again, most miserable 6 hours of my life. Lol.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
I put the zip on my sd card last time and it didn't find it, though? I made a folder called ROMs and put the zip in there. It said "no files found". How do I acces /mnt/sdcard? Maybe that's what I did wrong or is it not supposed to be in a folder like the ones I see like "DCIM" and all that?

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Just put it on the root of your SD card (the front main file list of the SD), then when you go to "install from sd" it'll bring you to your files, press the volume rocker up once, and you'll see stuff that was covered by your file list being longer than your screen. When I first started flashing roms on my OGD, I remember panicking because I thought I lost the roms I would put on until I would
facepalmrealize I had to scroll down to the end of the list to find them. Once you do this a few times, it becomes the easiest thing in the world, I flash new ROMs sometimes a few times a day when we get a flood of new/updated ones... (though it's been a while)
Don't forget to do a backup and wipe data/cache, cache and (in advanced) dalvik. I do each 3 times, mostly out of superstition at this point, I'm not sure if you even have to do that anymore (once for sure), but you should at least twice to clear out any partial files still lingering from other roms... And if you use Rom Manager, try to install roms from recovery (CMW), not straight from RM.Last edited by Effenhimer; 07-01-2012 at 07:51 AM.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Alright, thanks. My USB doesn't have to remain plugged in while this is being done, right? I'd just hit apply update from sdcard? Lastly I can hit wipe battery stats and nothing will mess up right? Would like to recalibrate after I install ROM.
Also as far as backups I have my Nandroid one from yesterday and I haven't done too much since, so I'll just stick with that.Last edited by naanan; 07-01-2012 at 08:35 AM.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Update: Flashed ThunderShed-v1.6_CM7.2-tbolt.zip, restoring Nandroid backup. It's been over an hour now...what should I do? Can I restart the process somehow?
Also, does anyone know what the folder in the sdcard is for Instagram? Those got deleted earlier, but I saved them and would to put them back in the gallery.
Thanks for all your help!Last edited by naanan; 07-01-2012 at 10:40 AM.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Well you want to make sure that the phone isn't in mount mode if you have the usb still connected (charge only). I do a backup EVERY time I flash a new rom, you never know if an old one has corrupted for some reason, and that's what they're for, a backup (you can always erase old ones if you are low on space). And did you say you flashed TS v1.6 and THEN restored the nandroid?... And yeah, you can wipe battery stats, but it's gonna take a few powering cycles for the battery to calibrate it's self again is all.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
It's not mounted and yeah, I have a backup and yes, I flashed TS v1.6, then restored the Nandroid. Is that wrong? It's showing me colorful animations on my screen for the past 2 hours. I actually think the Nandroid backup restore completed, but the power on again is what's taking so long. Is there a way I can just restart this process?
EDIT: Pulled the battery out, charging my phone. Maybe I had low battery and it couldn't power up before. Then I'll start up the phone and see if anything happened. If not, I'll repeat the process. Should that work?Last edited by naanan; 07-01-2012 at 12:06 PM.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
Once you install a rom, that's it. Once you installed TS v1.6, all you should have done is reboot. Then after a few long minutes, (the first reboot after a flash is always a little long, 7 minutes or so usually??) it will be just like doing a factory reset but with the new rom on it. Restoring the nandroid will just put the old backup back on, (sounds as though its corrupted by the way)
So go through the steps again.
1. Boot into recovery, (CMW).
2. Backup rom.
3. Wipe data/cache at least twice.
4. Wipe cache twice.
5. Wipe Dalvik twice in advanced settings.
6. Goto "install rom from sd"
7. Find the rom on the root of sd and hit the power button to select, scroll to "yes" and select.
8. Let the rom install, it will say "rom successfully completed/installed" (or something close to that).
For AOSP roms: 8.5. Flash gapps zip same as rom, (don't worry about wiping data, cache, dalvik... It's just Googles apps and permissions for the rom)
9. Scroll to "reboot phone", press power button to select.
10. Enjoy new rom after initial long startup.Last edited by Effenhimer; 07-01-2012 at 03:41 PM.

Re: Messed up installing the ROM really badly. PLEASE HELP!
I would also suggest using "My Backup Root" from the Play store. It's a VERY simple, straight forward backup app that lets you backup everything you need, (sms, mms, phonebook, apps, app data, etc) from one rom to another, as long as you don't switch phones. Before you go through and start the CMW process, you just use the app to backup what you want from your current rom. Then after you've installed the new one, you just re-download the app from the play store and use the restore option from inside the app once it's installed. Then you do another reboot and done, new rom, but with all your settings, apps/data, sms/mms, whatever you saved from your phone before the rom change. (Titanium always seemed clunky and didn't always transfer between roms very well for me.)
Good luck! - 07-01-2012, 12:54 PM

Sorry, forgot to add that to the list...
8.5. Flash gapps zip same as rom, (don't worry about wiping data, cache, dalvik... It's just Googles apps and permissions for the rom)
Also, depending on when the gapps zip is from, sometimes I find the Market app instead of the Play store app... It will update on it's own. - 07-01-2012, 03:48 PM
