Is there a difference in ADB and the AutoRoot functions?

As a newbie (but someone who can follow directions pretty well), what are the differences between the AutoRoot and ADB method of rooting? (besides the obvious "procedure methods").

The reason why I ask is because I saw a downgrade file in the ADB...so I'm guessing you have to downgrade some part of the OS before being able to root...does the rooting progress upgrade back to what it was before doing the root?

Does the AutoRoot do the same downgrade?

I'm probably missing something, but I'd like the latest parts of the OS (if the downgrade is doing this)...or am I reading too much into something? Thanks.

its the same, just automated

both will downgrade to gain root, then upgrade back to the original. I used the autoroot process and it was very easy. I took days to read all the threads because this is my first android phone and I didn't want to screw anything up.
