I totally love the double column of url bookmarks on a home screen. But surely there's a way to get rid of the original bookmarks. How can I do that???

Yes sir you can. In the bookmarks section of your browser you'll see all of the websites currently bookmarked.

Just do a long key press on the one you want to delete, a menu will pop up with some options. Select the delete option and poof, no more bookmark.

Well, sure 'nuf; thank you, rsix! What a relief to get those gone. If my studio were half as orderly as my digital devices, I could think better.
