You can increase the speaker volume. Under "settings-->multimedia-->audio enhancement settings -->SRS multimedia enhancement settings," uncheck "use default settings" and you'll see equalizer bars. You can adjust it to your liking from there. For some reason Toshiba has it set all the way down by default. Hope this helps!

This worked for me ever since I purchased my unit in July. I've seen multiple threads at Toshiba's forums and thriveforums.org complaining about volume levels. Without further amplification, and not perfect hearing, I'm fine. My low cost ($5) Aqua noise isolation earbuds as we'll as my hi end Bose Quiet Comfort (QC15) headphones work great.
