On the mobile app my guess is it plays at the highest resolution when u press HD. But if you go to the desktop site you can check it

Yes but when Google update YouTube to play videos it was only 720 and not 1080 because there wasn't any device with a 1080 display

1080 is not standard yet. very few phones has 1080 display. so getting youtube with that resolution will take some time.

There are some videos that are displayed in 1080p. There is a thread that has a few links to the vidros

I've downloaded saved vids in both 720 and 1080 to my phone and I can't really tell the difference as long as they are both high quality. So now I only put 720 vids on the phone. 1080 pics are a different story since they don't move.
