Text notification question

So I am probably blind, but is there a way to have text notifications turn the screen on? Sometimes I miss that little LED indicator.

Are you using a 3rd party SMS App?
Sliding Messaging supports it & LightFlow can achieve it too.

No I'm just using the stock one. I used to use Handcent on my previous phones.

Lightflow has a feature that turns on the screen for 5 seconds when you get a notification and you can set it to act specifically for the notification type.

Handcent has a setting that will turn the screen on and show you the text.
