What Happened? Update (not OS)

I got a message today that said I got an update (not GB) and had an OK button (no other options).
When I pressed OK my phone did something weird.
All my contacts are gone.
The background changed to the Magic Smoke Wallpaper.
None of my apps work except the ones that come preinstalled on the phone.
Any apps on my SD card aren't recognized even though it identifies the card is there.

Anyone know what happened?

For some reason, some people have been getting phantom update notifications that do this. It's not common, but it has happened to a few others. Unfortunately, you will need to do a factory reset to get back working.

Were your contacts on the phone or on Gmail? Were you syncing your contacts with Outlook?

I did have to do a reset. Most of my contacts were on Google.
It was a hassle setting up everything again and reloading all the apps.
Working just fine now.

Still wondering what it was and why it had that effect.
