Hoping this isn't a foreshadowing of other issues, but now my phone has randomly rebooted 3 times today. So I will answer my own questions and post them here.
Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset
5:21 PM - began reset
5:25 PM - called *228 to reactivate phone on VZW network
5:26 PM - phone restarted after programming
5:29 PM - 2 email accounts set up (gmail and exchange), receiving mail.
So less than 10 minutes start to finish, although it will probably take another 2 hours or so to customize/download apps.
Hopefully this will help someone else who may be on the fence about doing the reset.Previous phones: BlackBerry Storm 1, Droid Incredible - RIP May 24, 2011

Yeah that sucks. So a factory reset was the only thing that fixed this for you? I may suggest to you now, with the ease of rooting, to speed up your recovery for doing things like this, is root your phone. Get unRevoked 3.1 plug in your phone basically a one button root now. Once you are rooted get Titanium backup and backup apps, data, and system settings. That way if you think it's something like this again in the future you can restore your app and the data for them ect. pretty much instantly. (At least get appbrain and sync your phone for ease of reinstalling apps.)

Yeah, the restart definitely seems to have helped greatly.
The HTC Mail app is reporting 2.30 MB now, and is only being used for Exchange sync (3 days, 50K, no attachments)
I'd been considering root even before having these issues, mostly because I want a wifi access point for the infrequent times I travel outside an area with wifi I can already access free.
I haven't looked into the latest unRevoked yet, but I will certainly do so now. Thanks for the recommendation.
Also, I already have AppBrain, but I've only reinstalled the apps I use regularly (couple of games, Astro, Google skymap/googles/translate, etc.). I'm hesitant to reinstall iheartradio, however, because I'm 95% sure that it was preventing my phone from going into standby after closing it. I'm also wondering if having ATK installed for the first 2 weeks of ownership caused some issues that cascaded into the issues I had in the last 2-3 weeks.
The refreshed Inc. feels very much different, and much better, now.
I appreciate everyone who's contributed to this thread, and the rest of the forums. It has been quite helpful in solving minor issues and finding useful apps and time killers (aka games).Previous phones: BlackBerry Storm 1, Droid Incredible - RIP May 24, 2011

If I could pose a question to the many people far more knowledgeable than me...
Rather than factory reset and lose everything on the phone, for those of us that are rooted, can we just delete a file or files that is eating up all this RAM? Even if it removes HTC mail we can always install k9.
I found the files for mail but they are only a couple megs. Not the 120 megs that the phone claims is being used by mail.
Any thoughts?
Thanx. - 07-23-2010, 01:55 PM #230The Storm has cleared to an Incredible day! I ate an IceCream Sandwhich. Still needed JellyBeans. ;-)NEXUS!!!!!!

I just finished cleaning up after I got the low memory warning for the first time since I got the thing in April.
Thank gawd for Titanium Backup. - 07-25-2010, 04:44 PM #233

While it great to have some new faces to this thread, it sucks that this is still an issue. I've been curious about rooting my phone, and Titanium Backup sounds extremely helpful. It does seem thou after you hard reset your phone and use the settings close to what TC and myself have posted that the recurring issue is unlikely to return. If it does for you, please post what your settings were that lead to the issue coming back. Here is my most recent info:
Reactivated HTC Mail 7/12, +15 Day
Internal phone memory 6.6gb total, 5.05gb avail
Phone Memory 748mb total, 65mb avail
HTC mail 4.46mb up from 4.35mb on 7/19 (2.46mb data + 2.00mb cache)
Still going good...

I first received the 'low memory' error this past Saturday. I then spent 3+ hours researching the issue, performing factory reset and then restoring/reinstalling apps, only to have the error keep returning. Ultimately, I performed a factory reset, and then before doing anything else, I removed the Htc mail and mms apps entirely. Low memory warning no longer occurs. I installed Touchdown (30 day trial) for my office Exchange mail, K9 for personal IMAP mail and Handcent for messaging. I hope this is fixed before the 30-day Touchdown trial runs out because I'd really prefer the Htc mail client, as it handles both Exchange and IMAP accounts. I think I'll stick with Handcent.

Ok first time poster here, FIRST i want to thank all of you! I have been dealing with this for 2 days now. I too have found it to be the HTC mail causing this problem. I called VZW and I had more info then the rep (lol sad but most of us do) I was referred to HTC. I called HTC and was told to do the factory reset. I did not. I e mailed HTC and I got this in e mail yesterday....
Dear Pete
I understand that you are getting a “low memory” error message on your Incredible. Please plug your phone into the PC and choose disk drive from notifications while in disk drive mode go to “My Computer” on your PC . It will see your phone as two different drives. Right click on the drive and click properties>tools> defrag . You will do this for both drives. If you have any further questions, you can call our Technical Support department at 866.449.8358. Of course if you’d rather continue via email I am more than happy to provide whatever assistance I can.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number XXXXXXXX
Sincerely,

I started having this issue today (after having the phone work fine for two months). I deleted my account on HTC Mail and downloaded K9, but that didn't help.
I removed Facebook/Twitter syncing (since my contacts storage was at 84.3 MBs) and now my contacts won't load and I can't use the phone application. Everything else is working fine (browser, external apps), but I can't access my contacts and I can't make calls.
Anybody else having this problem?Last edited by letsunitetonight; 08-06-2010 at 11:05 AM.

I'm going to guess that you have your FB contacts linked to your GMail contacts.
I don't use FB at all (I'd remove it if I could) and I still had the memory issues.
Never had the problem with being unable to make calls, though.Previous phones: BlackBerry Storm 1, Droid Incredible - RIP May 24, 2011

Linked, not synched.
Go into your People app, and open up any Phone/GMail contact that you know you also have in FB.
At the top right, there will either be a broken chain icon (not linked), an unbroken chain (two white circles connected by a green line), or a button with the word "Link" on it and a number in a green circle.
If you have the broken chain or the Link button, the contact is not linked. The link button will suggest links based on what it thinks are similar fields on two separate contact cards (such as a Phone/Gmail contact with the name John Smith and a FB contact with the name John Smith, or two different names but the same email address).
If you have the unbroken chain, click on it and you will see how the contact types are linked (in my case I have several contacts that are linked on Google and Exchange). You can also add links from this screen.Previous phones: BlackBerry Storm 1, Droid Incredible - RIP May 24, 2011
