Default Unrooted, broken power button. Root possible?

    Hi all,

I'm running a Droid Incredible with Android 2.3.4, unrooted with a power/wake button that is no longer responsive. The phone is no longer under warranty. My first thought was to remap the hardware keys, making the optical joystick button my new power button. However, I don't have permission to modify the file (inc-kaypad.kl). All instructions I've found for rooting the Incredible require using the power button.

Is there a way to override file permissions without rooting? If not, is there a way to root without using the physical power button? Maybe running it through an emulator or something?

    Thanks in advance.

I would fix the Power Button.

Here's a link for the part:

And here's a video how to do it:

    Hope this helps.
