You mean, like, to lock just that app? Not by default, but there are app locking apps (that is, apps that allow you to lock other apps) in the market.

What does app locking do?

i just don't want to leave my phone down and have someone be able to get into my gmail. I guess I could just password lock the phone.

Oh, I was sort of assuming that you already had a lock pattern on there... if you just want to keep people out of your phone generally, just enable a lock pattern in Settings>Security. You only need an "app lock" if 1) someone else knows the password to the phone and 2) you want to be able to shield certain apps even from that person. For what you are talking about, the built-in security is more than sufficient.
