Confused on rooting

Ok, I've been reading all the rumors about Froyo OTA and I'm think I want to root. I really just want the 720p video recording ability and improved gmail. I've tried to read the section on rooting, and I've gone to unrevoked website, but I'm still unsure as to what I'm doing. The last thing I want to do is brick my phone as I love it, I just want to use the capabilities it supposedly already has. When I had a blackberry, I installed leaked OS's all the time, but this is so different and appears to be way out of my league. I find myself not understanding half of the vocab I'm reading. Maybe I just have no understanding of linux. In any case, if anyone can help me out understanding what exactly I will be doing if I root it would be appreciated.
