SMS/MMS issues with my dinc

so I'm a n00b to android back in May, but not new to hacking. I had this same problem prior to rooting so I'm just overlooking how to turn the htc sense SMS program off. I use handcent sms program and all my contacts have specific ringtone notifications. here lies the problem. the htc sms program and the handcent program BOTH load my sms/mms incoming msgs and fight with one another on the ringtones. Usually, the in house program wins thus rendering everyone who send me sms/mms msgs to 1 ringtone.. like my incoming mail notification. My gmail notifier works, as well as alarm, and different phone ringtones assigned to people. its specifically with the in-house sms/mms program fighting with handcent. I've uninstalled handcent, wiped all data, am running Lou's redemption rom and this is the only problem I have had. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Click on "Messages" icon>Menu>Settings>uncheck everything. That should do it.

okay- will try that. Thank you very much- this has been driving me CRAZY!!!
I'm hoping that this won't be an issue anymore.
