How can I confirm whether screen is AMOLED or SLCD?
I am new to the forum and probably don't have the best searching skills yet, so I apologize if this information is already posted.
I've found some threads on this topic but not a definitive method for how to confirm whether or not an Incredible is the AMOLED or SLCD variant.
Is there something I can check in the serial/model number(s) behind the battery, etc.?
I would really appreciate help on this topic.
Thanks so much. - 11-08-2010, 06:59 PM #2

I've got a certified refurbished and is there a way to tell which screen I have on the phone?

What if you have one that ends in VW2? Also, most people probably have that part of the box cut off to send back for rebates.

VW2 - the new box with 2GB sd card included
VW - original release without new packaging/sd card
both would be AMOLED screens - 11-09-2010, 02:41 PM #10

Much easier method, no use in making someone find their box, or check their serial number on their phone.
Turn the phone off. Walk into a pitch black room.
Turn the phone on... if you see 'light' coming from a black screen as the device turns on, you have SLCD. If you don't see any light from the screen until you get images, you have OLED.
OLED's don't illuminate when showing off black.
Simple test. - 11-18-2010, 07:12 AM #16
Hey, I don't have the box, I already sent it in for for my rebate. I hear that there are SLCD problems with rooting and unrooting. Is there any way to confirm which one I have? I have been looking at everything that came with the phone. When I got to settings>about phone>Hardware Info it says "002"
Any help would be appreciated. - 11-18-2010, 07:18 AM #17

i confirmed mine to be a SLCD via the dark test, bought less than a week ago. had to apply two updates (once in store) and the latest. my code is VW and it came with a 2GB card.. this is going against what you guys just stated..isn't it? or maybe it is a amoled and i didn't judge the screen correctly. it also same with the dark gray box with the green inside, i guess this is the new packaging?

I just want to tell you (without the snobby attitude of some on here) that they are in fact WRONG. A lady at work here asked me to Root her phone after seeing mine. I got mine last June, ordered in May. So I know it is AMOLED. She bought hers in late September/Early Oct. Not sure which. Since I was concerned about rooting without knowing if it was SLCD or AMOLED, I was wondering the same question, how do you tell the difference. Her markings are ALL the same as mine. There is no 3 anywhere. They both say ARD6300VW. By the posts earlier, mine came with the 2gb card. No VW2. Hers is CLEARLY a SLCD screen. No 3. Of course her box is long gone as it was cut up for the rebate anyway. The only way I know hers is SLCD is because side my side, the colors on my screen are far more brilliant. It's almost as though her screen looks faded. All the settings were set the same so I know it is clearly the hardware.
For those with the condesceding attitude, I suggest you don't try to answer others questions. Especially when your answers have no value.
Also the link on how to tell the difference, offers no answers.....unless you have a phone OF THE OTHER HARDWARE to compare it too. The question was, how do I know which model I have. Without one of the other kind to compare it too, there is no way to tell. No markings, no nothing. A good rule of thumb though is if you bought it September or later, it is probably safe to assume that it is SLCD, As they no longer make the AMOLED. Samsung is the only producer for them and with the phones being that in demand, production will never keep up with supply. I think even the EVO switched to SLCD didn't it?Last edited by 318sugarhill; 11-18-2010 at 02:38 PM.

Some say the glass is half empty. Some say its half full. I say, "Are you going to drink that?" - 11-18-2010, 10:57 PM #22

I don't want to add fuel to the fire, but I got my incredible about two weeks ago so by all accounts it should be SLCD (based on timing from what I've read). I think it is, but when I look at the code it ends in VW. I do have a 2mg card as well. I'm so confused.

Listen,
At work for some reason, the pictures that were posted of the two boxes did not come up. They are blocked by our network for some reason.
HOWEVER, after seeing the picture, I will take back the "your answer has no value comment".
I still stand by remarks about the condesending attitudes though. The fact remains that the OP does NOT have the original box, and neither do I. I have confirmed through the observation of two phones 1 known to be AMOLED, and the the other known to be SLCD, and on the phone themselves, there is NO DIFFERENCE in markings. So as the OP has asked, How do you tell the difference WITHOUT STILL HAVING THE BOX!!!
Thank you for the answer about the black screen. THAT seems to be the only way to truly tell......if you don't have the box. - 12-06-2010, 01:06 PM #25

This does not concur with model number matching. My ADR6300VW does have a very slight lighting during power up, which indicates SLCD, but the model nubmer does not have a 3 on the end, which indicates AMOLED.
Break the screen, if the gray LCD matter leaks out, it's an LCD. If the screen keeps working, even after shattering it, it's AMOLED.
