Which app are you using? You may need to download a software on the pc you are trying to connect to, your app should tell you when you try to use it. however, you probably need wifi on, and connect to the same network.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I use an app called GRemote to control my pc from my phone. You will have to install the server app on your pc. Just search GRemote in the market for more details. And you have to be on wifi on the same network as your pc. The dev was fast to respond to my questions on PPCGeeks forum also.

ok which are you wanting to do? use the phone for remote control? or get wifi or hot spot to turn on? i think it appears you want to control the TV.. if so i am just as much in the dark as you.. there are apps to turn comcast etc to turn on tivo or dvr at a set in time for a set channel to record etc,,never used em,,

as for hot spot,, get your wallet out if you use it..Verizon will nail you for another 20 bucks a month..
most of the time the programs want wifi, but straight ph on 3g Xg etc
wifi is best for about everything i have found. 3G etc is a Broadband connection making it easy to connect to your homes broadband router to wifi on home end or straight to b roadband.. i think you will find it best to flip your dvr just as you did in the past...

if your home CPU hooks to internet by wire as in phone cable, you are on a dialup system... apps wont control it.. if you are home watchin the TV you can change the channels if you are highspeed broadband.. just a thought and many here know more than i do...

I use Unified Remote. It connects through your wi-fi. You also gotta DL it for your PC as well.
