So, I have not gotten the Fascinate yet, but want to, assuming I can make it Googlefied.

If I root the phone, fix the search soft key button and then rename a bit of the bloatware on the phone... will I still get the OTA updates from Verizon?

I wouldn't change Touchwiz, install a rom, or anything like that.

This is my first android phone; could someone explain to me the importance of the OTA update? Especially if I already have a 2.2 ROM installed by the time it comes out via verizon

The ota update is just the official release of the software specifically designed for the hardware. And as faras still being able to get the update while being rooted, you'll have to revert everything back to stock as VZW will check certain things (such as software) before allowing the update to occur

There was an article on Android Central that says if you root the phone and keep it basic (not sure what that means) then you might be able to have it OTA update.
