Partitioning an SD card

I hope I am posting this in the right place, if not... Mods, please move to an appropriate thread.

I have never partitioned an SD card before so I do not know much about it. But since I see it come up quite often on this forum, I have a few questions:

1) Why do it? (really... no idea about this!)
2) How do you do it properly?
3) Does it have anything to do with "wipe cache partition" in CWM

Its not nescicarry. It lets you install apps on the sd, which is broke at best. Plenty of room on the phone for apps.

Wiping cache wipes a partition on your internal memory that your apps get installed.
