it is usually some type of connection problem either 3G or wifi

also try,
Settings>applications>manage applications>market>clear data/cache

have had these issues seemed to go away after a while, think it was a bad 3G connection.

Every now and again I'll get an app that im trying to download that will either take forever to start, or it will download but won't install. Canceling and trying again, or restarting the market always seems to fix. It's rare so it doesn't really bother me much when it happens.
