proximity sensor woes

I've been having this problem off and on over the past few months.

I am rooted, DJ05, SuperDark 1.1, and when I call voicemail, my screen stays up for a second, then blacks out. A reboot temporarily fixes the issue, but it eventually comes back.

I tried Screebl, and that did not help.

Is there a way to just shut the sensor off? I know the Droid 2 gives you the option under ##PROGRAM to shut it off, but the Fascinate doesn't recognize this entry.
