I just downloaded the new Froyo update for my Verizon Fascinate and while I was doing this I figured I might as well root it so that I can take advantage of the ability to tether to a computer. I as able to successfully root (through this tutorial: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html) - however ALL of my attempts to tether have failed... I've tried downloading wireless_tether_2_0_8-pre1.apk as well as others from: Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting but it tells me: "Unable to start tethering. Is your device rooted?"

I also tried Barnacle Wifi Tether and it tells me: "Barnacle requires 'su' to access the hardware! Please make sure you have root access."

Thank you to everyone who tries to help this humble student - good karma going your way!

Are you sure you successfully rooted? That method you used is old, outdated, and ineffective. That's why the thread has been closed since January 17. If Barnacle is not getting su, that means your root attempt did not take. Try using the updated method in either of these threads:

I attempted to re-root utilizing the second tutorial you provided. When rooting the command prompt in the last stage read:

"
mount: Operation not permitted
/data/loca/tmp/com/sh: cannot create /system/xbin/su: read-only file system
/data/loca/tmp/com.sh: cannot create /system/xbin/busybox: read-only file system
/data/local/tmp/com.sh: cannot create /system/appSuperuser.apk: read-only file system
unable to chmod /system/xcibin/su: Read-only file system
Unableto chmod /system/xbin/busybox: Read-only file system

Restarting your phone now
"

I've attached the screen capture.

So it looks like the root is not taking? Any ideas why or how to work around?

Thanks so much for your help - I sincerely appreciate it.

I had rooting issues too, just like you, with the failure to mount.
When I followed the manual instructions, I no longer had any issues.
Try this method.

Many thanks to DroidXCon, yet again.

Thanks - will try that out in the morning and let you know my results. I noticed that after the recent Froyo update the option to "Stay Awake" (which used to be located between "USB Debugging" and "Allow Mock Locations") is no longer there. Is it located in a different place now? Is it essential that this box be checked when executing the directions you provided to manually root?

I know this question may not have an easy answer - but why is it that some Fascinates take the one-click root and others do not? Don't all phones come in coded identical and thus should respond identically?

One-Click didn't work for me this time around, not sure why.
I don't know about the "Stay Awake" part, but "USB Debugging" was on.
I did turn my screen timeout option up to 10 minutes for good measure, not sure if it helped anything. (In the Display options)
Good luck. It was pretty painless.

Thanks I'll try that out.

I'm inferring that when you update with OTA Froyo on the Fascinate it un-roots your phone. Is this true?

yes, you will be unrooted. The nice thing about the link I posted to root - No ADB commands to type. Just follow the directions like it says and it is rooted in a matter of minutes.
