Google 'sync' frequency on 2.2

My Fascinate is syncing fine with my google account ( mail, contacts, calendar ).
The sync time/frequency seems to be 'always'.

If I look in accounts and sync, I do not see an option to tell the phone to only sync with google every hour, couple hours, whatever.
I can turn off sync, then 'manually' sync them, but a pain and I'm sure I'll forget.

Is there a way to do that? ie Set a sync frequency for your Google account ??Other accounts and apps seems to have various sync time options.

I maybe on a different ROM than you, but can't you just go to settings, accounts and sync and then turn off background data.

leave auto sync checked, and then set the sync times within the applications themselves?

I am running stock froyo 2.2.
If I turn off background data and auto sync, then google app 'contacts' and 'calendar' never sync.
Open either one of those and I see no option under settings to control the sync frequency.
I agree most other apps/accounts seem to have that feature, but I cannot find it for the built in contacts and calendar app.
