Does unlocking/rooting wipe?

every guide that shows you how to unlock and root says it will wipe your phone.

This is why its really a good idea to unlock the bootloader right when you get the phone, even if you are unsure if you want to root it. Rooting it later is painless and doesn't require you to wipe date, but the unlock requires a fresh start.

root won't wipe... but when you flash the only rom available it will.

Quick question. I have the GSM Version and I ONLY want to root. My phone is already unlocked and I don't care for an unlocked bootloader. Can I root with a locked bootloader? Will it wipe my device if I only root?

I don't believe you can root without unlocking the bootloader. You have to unlock first. Then root.

And there's a warning on the screen when it's asking you to confirm the unlock.
