I have two Gnex, bought 3 weeks apart. I have uninstalled Rom Manager from both.
One when I reboot into recovery has CWM Recovery version 184.108.40.206 and the other has 220.127.116.11.1. The 5 version has larger letters and can be controlled by touch or volume and power button. The 6 version can only be controlled by the volume and power buttons. I don't know how to change the version and wonder if anybody can enlighten me. I prefer the 5 version if that matters.

Uninstalling ROM manager does not change your recovery. Cwm did upgrade like a month or so ago I think so if you flashed Cwm from ROM manager that could explain the different versions. Either way I have been using TWRP for a couple months so I have not kept up much with Cwm. Maybe somebody else can chime in and help you out. Also, it sounds like one is the touch version and the other is just the regular.

personally, I use twrp as well. However, if you want to use can 18.104.22.168, simply find the image somewhere, and download to your computer. Then boot into bootloader.
The next last assumed you have fastboot.exe and all of your drivers properly installed.
Once in bootloader, move the img file you downloaded to platform tools folder of your sdk, then open a command prompt
Type in fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img
It will install it, and you are good
