Yes. In my Don't Panic guide I have a section on dirty flashing v. clean flashing. Read that, it explains why and what to do :).

Is there a way to flash roms without rooting your phone my nexus is unlocked I've got the file but how do I save it to my SD card so that I can update my rom in boot loader recovery?

I don't root my phone. It's unnecessary. The rom will be rooted though.

Use internal storage transfer on Windows. That's your sdcard.

You could download directly to your phone as well, but I transfer them from my computer. I really suggest reading our guides before continuing. Do that and post any remaining questions :).

I agree, you should read the guides first. It's not hard once you get the hang of it. I download everything directly to my phone. then boot into recovery and flash away. The zips will be stored in your "downloads" folder.
