Just got my nexus and Ive unlocked the bootloader so far, but havent rooted yet as I want to be sure theres an unroot method available first. This is my first android device, I only have a little experience messin around with my wife's optimus so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Can I make a nandroid backup through the stock recovery??? or do i need to have a custom recovery flashed on the phone first. I booted into recovery and all I see is an android with a red triangle above his stomach and the word Recovery above him. Theres nothing I can do from here, Am i supposed to use adb and if so what are the commands to get a nandroid backup.

Yes. Wait until a custom recovery, such as SPRecovery to come out, and flash that recovery. That's how you do nandroid.

However, I don't believe there is a rooted ROM out yet (but should be soon). So I think unlock the bootloader is the best you can do now.

Also, stock image is out just in case you bricked your phone
