I have the setCPU app but I'm not sure what exactly to set it to. How do I over clock and under volt this beast? I'm running Codename with the stock kernel. Does switching kernels help? If so what are some of the best ones and how do I switch them? I reaaallllyy need to improve my battery life

I use Franco kernel. I also have his app. That allows me to check for new kernels and set the hot plug option which shuts down one of the cpus when the screen goes off.

That decreased my batter life. Others said that rom also decreased battery life.

My battery life is great on Codename 1.1.4 and Franco's #13.1. I usually have about 40% left around mid night. Performance is smoking fast!

I just installed Franco Kernel 13.1 on Codename rom. But I have no idea how to access this kernel. Can you please help?

Every phone is different and will have different results on using different kernels, your best bet would be to try a few out yourself and see what works best for you. I set up a few profiles in SetCPU and underclock when the screen is off which seems to help me.

To change the settings for the kernel, you either need Franco's app (from the market...$2.) or something like SetCPU (also in the market).

Tad bit confused here, I know how to install custom roms and the reason for doing so. But I am at a loss as how to install a custom kernel. or for that matter why anyone would want to. Any Ideas? Does it install just like a rom in clockwork recovery?

Currently running GN CDMA Codename 1.1.4

They do install just like a ROM, though you don't need to wipe all data, you only wipe cache and dalvik, then flash (unless a dev specifies otherwise). The reason you might try them is because the kernel developers have in theory, optimized how the device processes commands, therefor speeding up the phone and hopefully giving better battery life. Some kernels tend to run better on an individual device, so even though my phone might run best on Franco's kernel, yours might do better on another one. The nice thing is that since you don't have to wipe data, it's pretty quick and easy to try different ones out. I'd suggest using the stock kernel (that installs with your ROM) for a day, see how it runs, then try a different kernel for a day.

Many thanks! That explains it so easily! Can roms have custom kernels on them as well? Because every time i install a custom rom it says the kernel is different as well in the settings! Are those not necessarily the best kernels to have with that rom?

Most of the ROMs are using whatever kernel the ROM developer was using while testing the ROM. That developer likes that kernel, and it could possibly mean that it's the best kernel for that developers phone (or more likely just one that he/she has used before and likes), but it never means that it's the best kernel for everyone. I'm not implying that any kernel that gets installed with a ROM is not a good one as they are all good. But feel free to try different ones. Your phone may run well on many, but better on one.

Okay, So say I want to run AOKP with Francos kernel (it seems many people have good luck with that). I would install rom like normal but before getting out of clockwork recovery i would install francos kernel as well?

First, don't forget to flash the gapps after the ROM (assuming that ROM requires a gapps flashing). As to flashing the kernel, some do it right then (after ROM and gapps), before leaving recovery, others (like me) go ahead and reboot after ROM/gapps, sign in to your gmail account, let the phone restore whatever it will, then go back into recovery and flash the kernel. I believe that either way works fine, but that's the way I do it.

never forget the gapps :P of course not! But thank! Also, what is the deal with ranco's kernel, like you need an app from the market to activate it, or something? what is the point of downloading that app!

You don't need to have it, but if you buy it (about $2), you can do a few things easier. It has a button to check for updates as well as a button for downloading any update. I know you can do that from your browser, but it's easier from the app. You can also use his app to over clock/under volt if don't have something like SetCPU. You can also use his Hotplug Enabler, which automatically shuts off one of the cpu's whenever the screen is off for battery savings. Some or all of these features can be used without his app, but it's more complicated. I think you have to issue adb commands. The app just makes it all easier. Plus, I'm all for supporting developers like this with a couple of bucks to keep the goodies coming.

Okay, so it sounds like more or less for convince sake i should grab it. for two bucks, why not! Those are some damn useful features i really would prefer to do with one tap instead of the command hah Do they have stuff like this for every kernel? In your opinion which combo between rom/kernel works best for your gnex?

For my phone, it's Codename Android (version 1.1.4) and Franco #13.1

I loved codename, but after having it for a day i couldnt pull up the keyboard, it kept force closing. but ill probably try it again when 1.1.5 comes out. and of course when the offical cm9 comes out ill be all over that. Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!
