Thanks, I asked on several threads and no one suggested that I do that and I wouldn't know how to do that without someone telling me how anyhow. Everyone suggested that I use Wugs and told me that I wouldn't lose my pictures.

Thanks for the warning, just trying to warn others.

One of the first things I said was to flash the recovery image via Wugs.

    Check my post from 1027.

I'm sorry you lost your info. Chalk it up to needing to backup everything when you mess with your device.

I opened up Wugs toolkit and clicked on flash stock and unroot. There was no option to just flash the stock without unrooting.

I think the toolkit should warn you that your phone is going to be wiped before it wipes your phone.

I agree. I've only used it twice, but that was to take a phone all the way back to stock.

I hear you but the toolkit should warn people that the phone will be wiped.

Is there any way to try to recover the images if they haven't been overwritten yet?

Check to see if they aren't synced with your Google account

Check Picasa and Google account on the Web. All of my pictures sync there and to dropbox.

See bolded parts.... The recovery image was all you needed to flash. Flashing back to stock, as you did, is completely different and not what dmmarck said to do at all.

I understand it can be confusing and mistakes can be made if you aren't paying attention. Shame if you didn't have backups of your pics.

There are some programs available for recovering information from hard drives after being deleted but I really have no knowledge or person experience using them.

As for the toolkit not clarifying it will wipe or erase something, I look at it as common rule of thumb whenever your going to attempt anything that is going to unlock/root/modify system contents on your device I ALWAYS make a backup of my sdcard content before hand along with anything else like (exporting contacts to file, etc).

My opinion its your device, and you should be taking your own precautions to protect your data before attempting anything with Rooting & Hacking.

I will say that I did advise to unroot as well, but that was after the recovery advice. The op wanted to unroot and that's one of the methods mentioned along with the other guides.

Can you please explain how to flash the recovery image only? Thanks.

    1. Download factory image from Google (Google "nexus factory images" or go here: and grab the one on the bottom for TORO)

    2. Extract the file "mysid-icl53f-factory-65895fa8.tgz" using winrar or 7zip or anything that unzips it.

    3. Go in the directory and you'll find the zip "image-mysid-icl53f.zip"... open that up. You will see a couple images, one of which is "recovery.img".

    4. Now I believe that wugs thing will flash files in fastboot for you (I don't know, never used it).. so if it does then just boot into the bootloader and have wugs do it.
.... Alternatively, place the recovery.img in your SDK toolkit folder that contains the adb and fastboot files, which you should have set up when you were first unlocking (unless you used wugs or some crap).

    5. Hold shift and right click inside the folder, select Open Command Window here. Boot your phone into the bootloader and plug it into computer.
    Type:
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    Hit enter.
    Done.

Do you think it is unreasonable to expect Wug's toolkit to give you a warning that your device will be wiped before it wipes you device?

No I think if it wasn't mentioned that was a slip on the devs part.

Although it is also common knowledge that most devices with a boot loader that requires to be unlocked also means you wipe the device. Most cases if users do all the proper researching and required reading before attempting Rooting & Hacking they come to realize that this is common (most cases) during the unlock or process of placing a custom recovery on the device it also means you wipe the device.

It's unfortunate that it happened but we see it all the time and in the end it's the fault of the user for not reading enough, asking questions or simply backing up stuff just in case.

Before I became a Moderator and was an Advisor here at AC, I always preached time and time again in my guides and posts...

"if your ever unsure of something regarding rooting & hacking, stop...ask.. and wait for an answer before moving forward." This time it only cost you some pictures, your lucky compared to many that end up with bricks

I was already unlocked and rooted. I was trying to unroot.

I was already rooted and had a custom recovery on my phone. I was trying to go back to stock recovery. I thought I needed to unroot to do that.

I would have backed up if it would have told me to because it was going to wipe my device. And I did ask questions and was told that rerooting would not wipe my pictures.

I'm guessing when you ran the toolkit and did whatever it was, it must have unrooted, locked and then unlocked the device which then wiped.

Again.. Example of why toolkits/one clicks aren't always the best option.. Learning to use Fastboot and do things manually is always the safest approach because you then ultimately control what is going to be flashed or done to the device by the commands you enter.

I agree but I get the "waiting for device" problem when I try to use fastboot because the Samsung drivers aren't Windows XP friendly. I really hate Windows Vista and 7 with all of their permissions crap and don't want to ever have to use them, but I guess this is the price that I pay for sticking with XP.

It seems like all that was done was a factory reset. I could have done that myself AND I would have received the warning about wiping the phone.

Funny you should mention Windows XP. I have had best luck using Samsung drivers on my Windows XP desktop over my Vista and Win 7 laptops... Most devs will agree to that Win XP was a good version for interaction with drivers.

Interesting. I don't know why the drivers won't work well for me.

What exactly is the "permissions crap" you speak of, lol? I don't have any problems with win 7 except that it's ugly and slow, lol.
