The OTA Update Center for custom ROMs

This sounds interesting:

A way for custom ROM devs to host their updates and have them pushed out to users as an OTA.

Yeah, sounds great. Would love for AOKP to get it; I'm sure CM will.

In a way, applications like Goo Manager and ROM Manager do the same thing, but it'd be nice for it to be more direct.

If I were a developer I'd be very careful with this. Once the developer pushes a ROM instead of the user proactively grabbing the ROM then the legal liability might shift.

If I'm in an emergency and can't dial 911 there's a liability issue. If I've personally chosen to install that ROM then I bear the responsibility. If the developer pushes that ROM to me and I can't dial 911 then he bears some responsibility. And, this is why carriers are so careful, and slow, pushing out new versions. It MUST be right or their neck is on the line.

I'm no lawyer but if I were a developer I'd contact a lawyer before using this feature.

I see what you're saying here, but after reading that article again it doesnt sound like this system would necessarily 'push' you to update the phone. With the carrier OTA system the phone will bug u non-stop if there is an update that needs to be applied until you finally give in and update. It sounds like with this system you will have the option to be alerted when there is a new build available or not by opting out of automatic checks when you reboot your phone. You can also go into the system update menu and manually check for updates. Really this whole process is like a shortcut to looking on the developers website for something new.

Granted, I'm not a lawyer by any means, but it doesn't necessarily sound like much, if any, liability would be on the developers for using this update process as the phone's user still has the conscious option of downloading and installing the updates.
