In a previous thread, someone stated that the Galaxy Nexus and Iphone are unique because Apple and Google design the software first and then build the hardware to optimize it as much as possible.

Since the Rezound and Razr already have pre-existing hardware configurations, one would expect that the Nexus would still run ICS smoother.

However, in general, when a previous Nexus phone is upgraded to the newest version of Android, how does it run, considering the hardware existed first?

There will be a couple different versions of android 4.0. The pure version, the version meant to run on devices with lower hardware specs like the nexus s, versions for tablets and versions that incorporate manufacturers interface like HTC sense. The software will be made and optimized for the device. It is open source and can be modified to work.

When a previous phone is upgraded to a newer OS I am sure google works with it to make it run, but its focus will obviously be on the newer nexus device.
